“Can I take my shirt off in space?” – McConaughey offered lead role in Interstellar

Via the fine people at http://www.deadline.com we’ve learned of the first proper casting news on Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, which starts principle photography this summer. Surprisingly it is not Michael Caine related. More surprisingly though it is Matthew McConaughey related.

A couple of years ago I would have bawked at that like a chicken surprised by a wandering finger. But he has gone through somewhat of a McConaissance (I can’t take credit for that gem unfortunately, as much as I would love too) in recent years in an effort to shed his rom-com leaning poster image. Having watched him recently in Killer Joe there is no doubting his acting chops. I am excited to see him in the upcoming Jeff Nichols drama Mud, which looks pretty sleazy and grimy. Evidently all those rom-com paychecks have allowed him the freedom to do some low paid indie work, and we are all reaping the benefits.

There is still little in the way of finer plot details for Interstellar which is slated for a November 2014 release. What we do know though is McConabody’s (that one is mine) character is called Cooper and the story will explore theoretical physicist and relativity expert Kip S. Thorne’s theories on the existence of worm holes and the possibilities of time travel. Nolan says the story will depict an “heroic interstellar voyage to the farthest borders of our scientific understanding”. Sploosh… (Archer fans will know what I am talking about http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xi5L4NtS8eM).

We’ll expect more casting news in the coming weeks. Everyone in Hollywood wants to work with Nolan at the moment so expect the usual ensemble cast. Keep it locked here for updates as we get them.

  1. Came here for McConaissance. Was not disappoint! I’ve flip-flopped from detesting MM to thinking he’s the best thing since sliced bread. The Lincoln Lawyer, Magic Mike and Killer Joe. Three bloody good films, three bloody good performances!

  2. He is definitely in the grasp of a McConaissance. Listened to an interview recently where he sounded almost remorseful of his rom com past. He is quickly turning into one of my favourite actors of the moment
